About Bonchester Bridge

Lock the door Lariston, Lowther comes on,
The Armstrongs are flying
The widows are crying,
The Castleton's burning and Oliver's gone.’
James Hogg

Following along the B6357, the hills turns to woodlands owing to forest plantings in the 1960s On the watershed between Liddesdale and Rulewater, the Note-o-the gate (now a pile of rubble) was once a Coaching Inn.

Crossing down into Rulewater the mansion house of Wolflee, once a stronghold of the Elliots, is now no more; nor is Wauchope House nearby which was visited by Burns on his Border Tour in 1787.
