Bonchester Bridge lies on the Rule water, with the town of Hawick six miles to the North West. The name of the town is said to be Roman being devised from the term "Bona Castra" meaning "good camp". Nearby, to the east of the village is Bonchester Hill, standing at 322 metres and with a hillfort at the top. The village has a hotel and pub.
