Wild Hill's Secret Flower Field

Somewhere in the hills above Lauder, a field has been kept secret all summer. Sown edge to edge with flowers grown especially for picking, it opens for the first time this August, for a handful of days only, and its exact location is revealed only when you book.

Wild Hill's Secret Flower Field sits at the heart of Hillhouse Farm, a fourth-generation working farm in the Scottish Borders, an hour from Edinburgh. Book a session, follow the directions that come with your ticket, and drive the single-track farm road into the hills. At the converted-horsebox welcome point we'll hand you snips and your picking vessel, and the field is yours: wander among cornflowers, poppies, corn marigolds, cosmos and more, and gather anything from a perfect posy to a bucketful of colour. Every visitor leaves with their flowers standing in water for the journey home.

These are harvest flowers: field flowers that grew alongside Britain's grain crops for thousands of years, sown here once again as the crop they always were. Around the field, the farm goes about its day, with oats growing, Aberdeen Angus and Highland cattle in the hills, and honey bees working the blooms alongside you.

Children are very welcome, with their own snips and a child-sized cup. Dogs are welcome on short leads. There's a small café in the hay shed, a picnic area and an accessible composting toilet. Wear your wellies: this is a real field on a real Scottish farm. Limited tickets per session, and when the flowers finish, so does the season.
