The Ghost Hunt is Afoot!

An interactive, investigation-led evening inside Scotland’s oldest working theatre — where every room holds a story.

This July, Mostly Ghostly invites you behind the scenes at the Theatre Royal — exploring the building after hours and offering a rare opportunity to take part in a paranormal investigation within this remarkable historic theatre.

Established in 1792, the Theatre Royal has stood at the heart of Dumfries’ cultural life for over two centuries. Alongside its long theatrical tradition, it has also become associated with a range of curious and unexplained experiences. Staff, performers, and visitors have spoken of footsteps in empty spaces, doors moving without explanation, and a distinct sense of presence throughout the building, particularly within the auditorium, balcony, and basement.

Over the course of the evening, guests will take part in small-group sessions using traditional ghost-hunting techniques — including dowsing rods, pendulums, mirror work, trigger objects, and basic audio recording — all grounded in carefully researched history and local accounts.

The evening will also include the chance to explore the auditorium, stage, backstage areas, and dressing rooms, and to hear accounts gathered from previous investigations and theatre staff.

With limited places available, this is an opportunity to experience the Theatre Royal from a different perspective and explore its more unusual past as the evening unfolds.
