Join Luonto Living for an accessible evening exploring the Solway Coast after dark — looking upwards at the night sky, but also looking around us at the landscape, wildlife and stories that emerge when daylight fades.
This isn’t a traditional stargazing session and you don’t need any previous knowledge of astronomy. Instead, the evening takes a wider look at what darkness means for the places we live in and the way we experience them.

Through Luonto Living’s approach to landscape interpretation, we’ll explore the connections between the night sky, the landscape beneath it and the people and wildlife that share it. We’ll look at some of the stars and seasonal features visible in the October sky, but also consider how darkness changes our perception of a familiar landscape, how artificial light affects wildlife, and why naturally dark skies are worth protecting.
We’ll also explore some of the cultural stories and traditions that have developed around the night sky and darkness, including perspectives from Finland and the wider Nordic region.

The Solway Coast makes a particularly interesting setting for this. Powfoot is a familiar, accessible coastal landscape during the day — but after dark, the same landscape can feel completely different. The changing light, the sound of the sea and the open horizon all become part of the experience.
And because this is a Luonto Living session, there will be a little Finnish outdoor culture woven into the evening too. We’ll take some time to pause, warm up and enjoy Finnish-style cinnamon buns (korvapuusti) together — because in Finland, being outdoors and sharing food and conversation are very much part of the experience.

The event is designed to be welcoming whether you’re already fascinated by astronomy or simply curious to experience somewhere familiar in a different way. You don’t need to be an experienced stargazer, own specialist equipment or know the constellations beforehand.
Depending on weather and visibility, we’ll make the most of whatever the evening gives us. A clear sky might reveal stars and planets; cloudier conditions will give us an opportunity to explore the landscape, darkness and night-time environment in other ways.

Come and discover a different side of the Solway Coast — and perhaps leave looking at the night sky, and the landscape beneath it, a little differently.

Age: Suitable for ages 10+. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
What to bring: Warm, weatherproof clothing and suitable footwear. Binoculars are welcome if you have them, but aren’t necessary.
