Metal detecting is transforming our understanding of the archaeological past – from some of Britain’s most spectacular discoveries to new approaches in conflict archaeology and numismatics.

Join Trimontium Museum for a day exploring the evolving relationship between archaeology and metal-detecting. Detecting the Past will examine best practice, successful collaborations, ongoing debates, and the role of metal detecting in understanding and protecting our shared heritage.

Bringing together metal-detectorists, archaeologists, museums and heritage organisations, in a brilliant lineup of national and international speakers, the symposium will explore different perspectives on detecting and archaeology — from Treasure Trove and systematic surveys to conflict archaeology, Trimontium’s own research, and the cultural heritage of metal detecting.

In-person and online options available.

🎟️ In-person registration includes lunch, teas & coffees, and informal drinks reception.
All attendees will receive access to the recordings of all the talks.

The event welcomes anyone with an interest in archaeology, metal-detecting, history, new discoveries and cultural heritage.
