This weekend, we are celebrating St Valentine’s Day. St Valentine is the Saint who is remembered for his Love, Compassion and Friendship.

How do we honour love and friendships? We do so by sharing food, and giving tasty sweets to our chosen people, and even to our beloved pets!

While the Romans did not celebrate St Valentine’s Day (St Valentine is a Christian Saint of the 3rd c AD), they celebrated Spring with lavish banquets where tasty local produce was elevated with exotic ingredients, herbs and spices.

What were these foods? And which of these foods were brought to Britain by the Romans in the 1st and 2nd c AD?
