Moffat Community Observatory - Open Night

date_range 17th October, 2026

Every effort has been made to verify the accuracy of the event information but we recommend contacting the event organisers before attending.

Ther is no limit to the wonders of our star studded night sky
Moffat was the first town out side America to obtain Dark Sky Status and the Community Observatory was built, following the award from Dark Sky International, by members of Moffat’s Astronomy Club. We will be hosting an Open Day at the start of the Dark Sky Festival and an Open Night at the end of the Festival. In addition to our Open Day on 10th October our Open Night on 17th October will include, weather cloud permitting, a view of deep sky objects with our fixed 16 inch telescope and also planets with various sizes of portable telescopes. There is no limit to the various wonders of our Dark Night Sky. There is no booking necessary on the open sessions – the more the merrier for stargazers' chat. The Community Observatory will be open, again cloudless permitting, on all other nights throughout October to March but visit www.mco.scot to add your interest in visiting our volunteer hosted Dark Sky Community Observatory.
The South of Scotland night skies may be threatened in a few years by an invasion of red aviation warning lights if all the 40 or so wind farm proposals are implemented and a display of the various locations will be on show at both the Open Day and Open Night.
