The Chisholme Gardens

The beautiful walled kitchen garden is a central part of the life of Chisholme. Throughout the year a succession of vegetables, salad and fruit is produced for the Chisholme Kitchen. The Journey from earth to plant to kitchen to food on the table, all meals are cooked and prepared lovingly from scratch. The garden is a place of beauty and birdsong and hard work and enjoyment, and students and volunteers are invited participate in this.

The tasks in May and June
We'll be planting the main crops in the garden: more root veg, peas and beans, leeks and brassicas, salads and flowers for cutting. There’ll be lots to do in the tunnels: harvesting, successional sowings of salad crops, planting summer crops – tomatoes and courgettes and keeping everywhere weeded and tidy. Plenty to do; plenty to learn; plenty to eat!

Join in with meditation and study
During the volunteer weeks you will be invited to join in the full life of Chisholme. There is a daily programme of meditation, meals, work periods and study sessions during the week to which everybody is invited. On these volunteer weeks, work periods will focus on the Kitchen Garden, but work in the house, kitchen or on the estate is also an option.
