February in the South of Scotland is a month of contrast. Winter begins to ease into spring in some corners of the region, while others still embrace the darker nights and the sights they reveal.

Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders come alive with an exciting mix of events. Whether you’re drawn to thought-provoking art exhibitions, looking to entertain the kids during half-term, are on the look-out for delicate snowdrop displays, or are focusing on your own self-care, there’s something for everyone.

The month offer the perfect excuse to explore, unwind, and be inspired. Here’s what you won’t want to miss this February in the South of Scotland!


Live Music, Theatre and Nights Out

February brings a strong line-up of live performances across the region. Music fans can enjoy powerful tribute shows, including My Heart Will Go On, a celebration of the music of Celine Dion at Loreburn Hall on the 5th of February, followed later in the month by Hometown Glory, the ultimate Adele tribute at the Buccleuch Centre in Langholm on the 15th. Both promise big voices and a feel-good night out during the winter months.

Theatre and vocal performances continue with The Show Tunes Must Go On!, a joyful evening of musical theatre favourites at the Buccleuch Centre on the 6th of February, and Opera On Your Doorstep: The Office Party, on two February dates at Newton Stewart Cinema. These intimate productions bring opera into unexpected settings to make it accessible to all.

Scottish star Brandon McPhee brings his lively new show to Langholm in the South of Scotland on the 19th of the month. The artist blends music and storytelling with plenty of warmth and humour. Just a few days later, also at the Buccleuch Centre, fans of punk and post-punk can catch John Lydon, also known as Johnny Rotten, as he takes to the stage to share stories from his remarkable career in a candid and thought-provoking live talk.

Closing out the month, Ben Walker, Scottish Young Live Act Winner of 2024, heads to Stranraer for a free Live in Libraries session. The one-of-a-kind concept sees national stars play among books and shelves – it’s an intimate and unforgettable setting.

Flavourful Journeys

February is also a great month for foodie events int he region. Schloss Roxburghe continues its guest chef series with another celebration of culinary creativity. Paul Leonard, renowned Head Chef at The Forest Side in Grasmere, heads to the 5-star hotel to collaborate with head chef Dan Ashmore. Their tasting menu will showcase seasonal goodness, complete with a pre-dinner champagne reception. On the 26th of February, The Globe Inn in Dumfries’ New Zealand Summer Nights offer a relaxed evening of food, drink and atmosphere, adding a global twist to a historic venue.

Those looking for hearty fare but still keen on an international twist should head to Garlieston. Private chef Lee Concannon is popping up at The Hive on the 25th of the month to serve up an around the world tour in burgers. Expect truffle parmesan bites alongside Mumbai Masala inspired burgers. Booking is essential!

February Half-Term Fun

With half-term just around the corner, there are indoor and outdoor options to keep the kids entertained. Make the most of special discounts through ScotRail’s Kids Go Free initiative at a variety of local attractions in the Scottish Borders.

Thrill-seekers of all ages will relish Go Ape Glentress’ half-term outdoor adventure sessions from the 14th to 22nd of February. Tackle the high ropes experience in one of Scotland’s most beautiful forest locations near Peebles. If you want to keep your feet on the ground but not firmly so, Caledonia Park Outlet Centre are turning into a Scottish Alpine destination for half-term. For Caledonia Curling Club, visitors can test their potential for the Winter Olympics with a free outdoor curling experience.

Seasonal Nature Experiences, Stargazing, and Winter Walks

February is a beautiful time to reconnect with the natural landscape. It’s also peak snowdrop season, with carpets of delicate white flowers marking the slow shift to spring. There are stunning displays throughout the region, with special events celebrating them at Kailzie Estate, Drumlanrig Castle and Dryburgh Abbey.

For something more celestial, book a Stargazing Weekend with a Top Scottish Astronomer. This special event at the Selkirk Arms Hotel in Kirkcudbright invites visitors to look skywards. Over the 20th to 22nd of February, guests can learn about stars, planets and winter constellations while enjoying some of the darkest skies in the South of Scotland.

Those curious about the coast and wild swimming can sign up for Sea Sense on the 15th of February. The sessions at Coldingham offers a gentle introduction to wild swimming without getting into the water. Led by experts, it’s a thoughtful look at our relationship with the sea and its benefits.

History Tours and Curious Evenings

February is ideal for slower, deeper exploration. In Dumfries, the town Ghost Walk with Mostly Ghostly adds a touch of mystery to the month. As night falls, stories of the town’s dark past emerge… It’s a popular tour, so make sure to book in advance.

Join local guide Stewart on his Border Abbeys Tour. Running on Valentine’s Day, it takes visitors through some of the most striking historic sites in the heart of the Scottish Borders. The full-day tour combines dramatic ruins and centuries of history.

Those keen to delve even deeper into history can learn to read the landscape like an archaeologist. Sign up to the three-day Romans, Reivers and the Rough Wooing tour on the 22nd of February with HARP. Led by a professional archaeologist, the tour includes exclusive access to historic gems, as well as the opportunity to record monuments or real artifacts for yourself.

Creative and Community Events

The month begins with the Aye Do Dumfries Wedding Showcase, offering inspiration for couples planning future celebrations. It’s a relaxed and welcoming event, highlighting local suppliers and venues from across the region at Loreburn Hall.

Towards the end of the month, the Wool Woven and Wild Festival celebrates local textiles, landscape and creativity at Langholm’s Creation Mill. From alpaca walks to wool, the festival brings together all those with an interest in crafting and nature through workshops, talks, performances and tours. It’s one of February’s standout cultural events.
