About Shambellie House

Shambellie is a Scottish Baronial style house built in the 19th century for the Stewart family who have been associated with the New Abbey area of Dumfries for centuries. The pretty village oozes history being the home of Sweetheart Abbey and New Abbey Corn Mill. Shambellie House is built on a raised bank in the Shambellie woods giving panoramic views out towards the Solway coast and the magnificent hill of Criffel. It is now the venue for a programme of arts, heritage and wellbeing courses, activities and events, from art to storytelling, quilting to creative writing. These take place in the rooms which the Stewarts once used to entertain their guests. The house is surrounded by beautiful grounds with paths and trails through its ancient woodland.
