Museum of Lead Mining

STARTS HERE

Museum of Lead Mining

Experience the only underground mine tour in Scotland. Discover how the miners worked underground and how they relaxed with books from their unique library.

Alluvial gold is found in the sands and gravels in the local burns. Local gold was used in the crown of King James IV of Scotland and in today's Scottish Parliamentary mace.

About Museum of Lead Mining

Nestled in the heart of Wanlockhead is the Museum of Lead Mining. Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland sitting at 1531 feet above sea level. It is a spectacular place to visit, with rolling hills and breath-taking views. The museum tells the unique story of this once important leadmining industry. With your hard hat on you can walk into the original Lochnell Mine and see where the lead ore was mined. It is the only lead mine open to the public in Scotland.

You can try your hand at goldpanning and take home any gold that you find.

For health and safety reasons we regret that we are unable to allow children under 5 year of age to take part in the underground mine tour.
