Sanquhar Riding of the Marches is an annual celebration of the Royal Burgh Sanquhar’s heritage, bringing together tradition, community and spectacle in one of the region’s most distinctive local festivals.

Rooted in centuries-old custom, the event centres on the ceremonial riding of the town’s boundaries, led by the Cornet, Cornet’s Lass and Ensign, accompanied by a large cavalcade of riders.

Across a full week of activity, the town comes alive with ride-outs, parades, community events and family entertainment, culminating in the main Saturday when the marches are ridden, the Cornet reports from the boundaries and the Sanquhar Queen is crowned in Queensberry Square.

The day continues with a colourful parade of decorated floats and pipe and silver bands through the town, followed by an afternoon of celebrations and the highlight of the massed bands along the High Street.

The Sanquhar Riding of the Marches is a proud expression of local identity, where generations come together to celebrate the Principals, welcome visitors, and keep long-standing traditions alive.
