Saltmarsh landscape with large fields. Church sits in the foreground, with hills in the background
The saltmarsh at Wigtown attracts thousands of wintering pink footed geese, barnacle geese, ducks and waders. In spring and summer a host of special plants cover the merse, and the sound of skylarks fill the air. It is a beautiful and rare habitat which is inspiring to write about.

Local author Stephen Rutt will guide you to write creatively about nature. Also an amateur naturalist, he specialises in creative non-fiction prose and birds. He won the Saltire Society’s first book award, as well as a Roger Deakin award for his debut book, The Seafarers. His second book, Wintering was one of The Times’s best nature books of the year for 2019. The Eternal Season, his third book, has been shortlisted for the Saltire Society’s non-fiction book of the year. His writing has been published by Granta.com, The Guardian, The Scotsman and Caught By The River.
