About The Montagu Bridge

This fine Adam construction was built between 1790 and 1792 by Robert Adam to celebrate the Union by marriage of two great families The Buccleuch family and the Montagu family who's estates were in Northamptonshire.Robert did not live to see the bridge unveiled as he died shortly before and it was handed over by his brother James. Although originally surmounted by statues they have since been removed and the bridge's clean Adam lines can be appreciated
It stands on the site of an earlier bridge and the huge earthworks leading to the bridge have subsumed any traces of this older structure.
Park on either side of Dalkeith Country Park and walk through the park. The bridge is at Grid ref: NT 33363 68120.
