About Stobsmills Gunpowder Mill
Scotland’s first industrial gunpowder mills started production here in 1794. Four dams and a system of lades and water wheels on the Gore Water provided power to the mills.
Gunpowder was in great demand during the Napoleonic Wars, and in the expansion of coal mining. The mills closed in 1861, but some ruinious evidence may be seen in the woodland by the Gore Water.
