About Rutherfords Micropub
Simon and Debbie Rutherford opened Scotland’s first Micropub in the Summer of 2015.
Always known for his love of 'the quirk', Simon never really fitted in to modern life.....
He is also a perfectionist with love of a good ale, a fine spirit, wholesome local food and lively banter. His answer? "Embrace the quirk! " Rutherfords Micropub was born! And now we produce our very own Gin - including the World's First Haggis Gin! It's braw!!
At that time, there were approximately 200 micropubs in England, but not one in Scotland... Simon visited a few of these and chatted with the owners. When he returned to Scotland, the hunt was on to find the right property.
Kelso was a natural choice, with it’s beautiful Market Square (the largest in Scotland), on a sunny day, it feels like you could be in Belgium. The former knitwear shop next door to the stunning Cross Keys Hotel had been empty for many months, and, as one of the rules of a micropub is that it must be converted from an old shop (to bring back life to the high streets), it was perfect.
Debbie and Simon approached Scottish Borders Council, who had never heard of the concept before. They were incredibly supportive, and soon the builders were busy on site and the first micropub in Scotland opened it’s doors...
Since then, this tiny pub has ‘grown’ to offer so much more than anyone would expect, and has several awards under its’ belt too, including the Most Innovative Business in Scotland!
