Dominated by the Lady Victoria Colliery buildings, there is no doubt that Newtongrange was a coal mining village. The mine closed in 1981 and there are still residents who remember the pit being open. Newtongrange was a planned village when 'The Lady' was sunk in 1894 to provide decent housing for the miners. It is the largest planned mining settlement in Scotland and a walk around will show how every aspect of the miners' lives was catered for in work and at play. The colliery buildings now house the National Mining Museum in Scotland and a visit here will give you a first-hand experience of what life must have been like as a coal miner through the ages.
