About Newcraighall Railway Station

Now on the fringes of Edinburgh, Newcraighall was built on green fields in the 1890s to house miners for the Newcraighall Colliery, otherwise known as the Klondyke Pit, which dominated the village until closure in 1968. On the site of the colliery and associated brick works, Fort Kinnaird retail park has grown up to host at least 55 large retail units and entertainment outlets. The village itself was nearly decimated by poverty after the closure of the mine and many houses were demolished but the core has now been restored and the residents are proud and protective of its mining heritage. Get off at Newcraighall to shop at some of the biggest retail outlets in the country. Or, if you feel like exploring, make your way along Newcraighall Road past the low rows of miners cottages and find the green oasis at Newhailes Estate before joining the Brunstane Burn or making your way to the sea.
