About Newbyres Castle

A mid-16th century construction, Newbyres Castle was once a substantial L-shaped tower house built by Michael Borthwick of Glengelt to oversee his coal mining operations in the area. Later bought by Sir James Dundas in 1624 - Lady Arniston of the house gained a local reputation as a flamboyant and generous host within the community. Largely demolished in 1963 by the local council, the recognised Ancient Monument by Historic Scotland is currently being reappraised in an attempt to consolidate the remains, making its significance more accessible and understandable.
