About Newbattle Viaduct

Opened in 1847, this impressive 23-arch viaduct was built by the North British Railway Company to carry the railway over the River South Esk. There was an earlier, equally impressive viaduct just a few metres downstream built by the Marquess of Lothian in 1831 to transport coal but this used the narrower Scotch gauge and could not be adapted.
