About Cockpen Church

Commissioned by the Earl of Dalhousie and built in 1820, this church replaced the 12th century one which now lies in ruins a mile to the south. The 1680 bell from the old church was taken to the new one. It has a tall and conspicuous tower so that it could be seen from both Dalhousie Castle and Arniston House. The 'Laird of Cockpen' was a song written by Caroline Oliphant in the early 19th century and a rather small waistcoat said to belong to the Laird can be seen in the vestibule of the Church.
