When visiting the South of Scotland, think about the alternative modes of transport available to you. Taking the bus or the train is a fantastic way to explore the region. Even the most remote destinations can be accessed by public transport for a budget-friendly, greener way of getting around.

We also have a whole network of cycling and walking routes for you to discover. Slowing down and connecting with the nature, people and places around you is a great way to make memories that last a lifetime.

The South of Scotland has so much for you to see, so take your time and soak up everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer.

The South of Scotland has a whole host of accommodation options to suit every style and budget. If falling asleep to the sound of nature’s symphony is your thing, look out for local camping or glamping sites.

For a chance to get friendly with the locals and support smaller businesses, family-run B&Bs are another great choice.

Look out for Green Tourism companies – those that actively strive to reduce their carbon footprint. The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere also has schemes supporting environmentally-friendly businesses.

Simple things like shopping, eating and staying in local businesses does so much to support the community you’re visiting. As well as this, you’re guaranteed to have a more authentic experience if you’re open to sampling some local delicacies or picking up some locally made crafts to take home with you. Every purchase counts as it allows small, rural businesses to flourish and it brings money back into the community.

The South of Scotland is the perfect playground for all sorts of outdoor pursuits. As our landscapes are shared with people from all over the world, as well as the local communities and the wildlife that lives there. So it’s important that we take care to protect each and every habitat.

• Pick up your litter, take it home with you, or dispose of it correctly.
• Avoid starting fires, or disturbing natural fauna or habitats.
• Keep your dog on a leash and don’t disturb any farm animals you encounter.
